Do you ever look at a painting and get awestruck? Do you also wonder “what was going on in the artist’s mind when they painted this?”. We can totally relate to you. Paintings have a beautiful way of conveying stories without saying anything, and to mesmerize these beauties, we have listed down the best paintings in the world.

1. Mona Lisa

They say a smile is one of the most difficult things to paint, but Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa happens to have one of the most realistic smiles that have ever been painted. This painting is considered one of the best art of all time because it not only looks life-like but also has an interesting story behind it.
Did you know that a man named Peruggia stole this masterpiece from Louvre because he believed that a painting this exquisite should belong in an Italian gallery and not a French one. But eventually, it was returned to where it belonged, and now hangs at Louvre where people stand in queues to take the beauty in.

2. Impression Sunrise

The idea of painting spontaneously and not in studios emerged from Impressionism, where the whole concept was based on drawing something out of doors, like everyday scenes and landscapes. One of these paintings that took everyone by surprise was the “Impression Sunrise” which was painted by Claude Monet that depicted his hometown. Monet was the star of Impressionism which happens to be one of the first modern art movements.

3. The Starry Night

How can we forget Van Gogh when it comes to listing down the most famous paintings around the world? This painting is loved and admired by so many people across the world, that people have attempted to host exhibitions where The Starry Night came real, that is in 3D.
This captivating painting was made by Van Gogh when he was in the asylum of Saint-Paul-de-Mausole while suffering from paranoia and depression. This painting represents how he perceived an ideal village to look before sunrise. There is no doubt that this is one of the most famous paintings to ever exist. It almost comes as a surprise that a mind full of chaos, emotions, and overflowing feelings, could make something so extraordinary and real. Some of Van Gogh’s best works like his blue self-portrait and Irises were produced while his stay in the asylum.

4. The Old Guitarist

Sometimes we say our feelings through paintings and not by words, and The Old Guitarist is just another painting that says a lot without saying anything at the same time. Picasso was one of the greatest painters of all time, who painted this while he was living in his blue and grey period.
One of Picasso’s closest friends died by suicide, following which he painted this mindblowing image in 1903. What was he thinking? What was going on in his head? What was he feeling? Is this painting his friend? These are some questions we shall never get answers to. So, all that we have now is this beautiful yet sad painting, that left people in awe, and without any answers.

5. The Scream

Anxiety is an unknown fear. It could be fear from something, or fear of something, or as many people call it, an unusual tingling sensation, fast heartbeats, and a chaotic mind. So, how can someone draw something that can only be felt and not seen?
Originally titled “The Scream Of Nature” was painted by Edvard Munch, and it symbolized anxiety in its purest forms. This idea came to his mind when he was out with his friends for an evening walk when all of a sudden he started trembling with anxiety and felt like a scream passed through nature. His friends kept walking ahead while he paused and felt exhausted all of a sudden. The Scream is one the best paintings of all time that represents something that can only be felt, and not seen.

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see”

- Edgar Degas
